Since opening up my first copy of BUST Magazine in the nineties, it’s been a mainstay in my magazine rack. Their unapologetic attitude and strong prose was a breath of fresh air amid my teenage diet of glossy magazines with less than stellar messages, and has continued to inspire me well into adulthood. So, naturally, they were at the top of our list for our latest round of Guest Tumblr Editors.

I'm a senior in high school from NYC, currently applying to business schools in FIT, Parsons & other colleges. I gave up my dream to be a musician to pursue fashion & now I have a social media internship with an internationally claimed eye-wear designer. I feel good about where I am & I know that fashion is my future, but I still feel like my career remains a mystery (should I be a stylist? blogger? buyer? The world of fashion is vast!). Any advice for me and seniors in high school of the like?

Wow, sounds like you have so much figured out already (way more than I did at that point)! I think the best advice would be not to pigeon-hole yourself into anything. My first two years of college were spent at University of California, Santa Cruz as the ever-dreaded “Undecided” major (yes, a capital U). I honestly didn’t know what I wanted to be, and that’s not a bad thing! Turns out the reason I didn’t know is because what I was passionate about wasn’t offered at that school. While home for the summer between my sophomore and junior year I took an internship at a jewelry company. I had to do everything from help assemble parts to email potential stores to see if they were interested in the line or even get in touch with PR departments at magazines. It was the first time I felt so engaged and excited about what I was doing. That was the first time I realized I could do for a living something I was actually passionate about and loved. By the end of the summer, I decided to take the plunge and leave California for my new home in New York studying fashion merchandising and haven’t looked back since.

Aspiring designers, sharpen your pencils, put your creative caps on, and start sketching — our Make the Cut Contest is back! And to keep things fresh as the dew on a spring morning, we’re doing things a little differently this time around. Instead of providing you with a theme and inspiration board, we’ve simply selected a single swatch of fabric (the one above) on which you’ll need to base your beautiful designs. The winning piece will then be made from this exact  black-and-white, 100% cotton material!
Here’s how it works: We’ll accept submissions until 9:01 a.m. PT on 10/17. After that, we’ll narrow it down to our top twenty picks, which will then be posted for voting on our Facebook fanpage from 12 p.m. PT, 10/25 to 12:00 p.m. PT, 11/1. On 11/12, we’ll announce the fan-chosen champ.
And what will that one talented contestant win? For starters, $500! Then, their inspired item will be produced — with their name on the tag — and sold on ModCloth.com.
But, don’t start sketching just yet. First, check out the details and guidelines up on the ModCloth Blog! High-res
